Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for accurately segmenting a word even in a document with a narrow pitch or a document which a few initials decorated with figures. SOLUTION: One line is segmented from a document by using peripheral distribution in a horizontal direction (main scanning direction) from picture data. Next, the line is divided into a plurality of blocks (S16), each block is further divided into two parts in a vertical direction, and each peripheral distribution is searched (S20). Then, a part whose upper or lower peripheral distribution is zero is searched, and the corresponding part whose other peripheral distribution is zero is searched, and the value of one that remains zero for a longer time is recorded as a histogram (S22). Next, dispersion below or above all the points of the completed histogram is searched, and the two dispersions are added, and the smallest point is defined as a threshold between words and characters (S24). Then, a part in which the histogram is equal to more than the threshold is determined as a separation between words (S26).
