To enhance the convenience of a three-dimensional visual sensor by enabling easy display of a three-dimensional shape of a set effective area, together with the relation with the surroundings.
One of stereo cameras is set to be in a state wherein it views a supporting surface of work W from the front. An image formed by this camera is displayed and the range of an area that makes measurement processing effective is designated by a rectangular frame. Besides, an operation for designating upper and lower limit values of a height measurement range is accepted. When each designation is established, zero is set as a z-coordinate for each component pixel of the image for which the rectangular frame R is set, and a z-coordinate based on the upper limit value of the height measuring range and a z-coordinate based on the lower limit value thereof are set for the coordinates corresponding to the rectangular frame. Three-dimensional information produced by these settings is subjected to perspective transformation from the direction of the line of sight set by a user, and a projection image thus formed is displayed on a monitor.
