PURPOSE: To obtain the objective compound in high purity and recovery ratio by distilling a chlorinated composition containing α,α'-dichloroxylene at a specific temperature or below in recovering the α,α'-dichloroxylene from the aforementioned chlorinated composition using a distillation apparatus having a material made of stainless steel in the distillation system.
CONSTITUTION: An α,α'-dichloroxylene, especially α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene useful as an intermediate for synthetic resins is recovered from a chlorinated composition containing the α,α'-dichloroxylene using a distilling apparatus having at least a material made of stainless steel in the distillation system. In the process, the distillation is carried out at ≤175°C, preferably ≤170°C temperature to industrially and advantageously afford the objective compound in high purity and recovery ratio using the relatively inexpensive distilling apparatus made of the stainless steel.
