To provide a method of driving an image reader that can shorten the time needed to read an image without spoiling image reading performance.
In the method of driving the image reader including a detection electrode, a precharge control switch, an amplifier, and a readout switch, the precharge control switch is switched to an electric conduction state to output a precharge voltage to the detection electrode. After the precharge control switch is switched to a non-conduction state, a reference voltage is applied to the amplifier, and the reference voltage having been adjusted is output from the amplifier to the readout switch. Before the reference voltage is applied to the amplifier, the readout switch is switched to the electric conduction state.
