PURPOSE: To obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal display with hardly recongnizing refreshing drive even in fixing processing by adopting a drive method by which the change of the transmission light quantity of a specific pixel is made equal to the change of the transmission light quantity of another two pixels or small than the light quantity.
CONSTITUTION: Electric field ±(Eg+α) is applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecule of a pixel constituted of a scan electrode applied with nonselction voltage and a signal electrode applied with rewrite voltage or hold voltage, and the electric field--Eg-α and Eh or Eg+α and ≠h are applied to the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecule of the pixel consituted of the scan electrode applied with selection voltage and the signal electrode applied with the hold voltage. At this time, in the force applied to liquid crystal molecule, the former becomes larger than the latter or both become nearly equal, in the change in the transmission light quantity of the pixel, the former becomes larger than the latter or both become nearly equal. Were, the electric field Eg, Eh are electric field values decided by whether effect of dielectric anisotropy of ferroelectric liquid crystal material is smaller than the effect of self polarization or equal extent.
