To provide a method of drying low grade coal which suppresses reduction of output and efficiency of a thermal power plant, reduces problems such as sulphate corrosion, and can dry low grade coal, when the low grade coal such as brown coal is dried and used as fuel for the thermal power plant, and to provide the thermal power plant using the low grade coal as fuel.
A portion of a boiler exhaust gas at a desulfurization equipment outlet is extracted, the boiler exhaust gas is heated using solar heat energy, and the heated boiler exhaust gas at high temperature is used to directly heat and dry low grade coal such as brown coal. For instance, a boiler exhaust gas at an outlet of the desulfurization equipment 46 is pressure-increased by a dry gas pressure-increasing fan 51, the resultant is fed to a solar heat collecting apparatus 54, the boiler exhaust gas heated by the solar heat collecting apparatus 54 is supplied to a brown coal drying apparatus 23 to dry brown coal, the dried brown coal is supplied via a brown coal mill 25 to a boiler 1, and is burned therein.
