A method of encoding image data includes a step 14 for repeating a process of dividing a block into two subblocks, based on an average value of pixels in the block and creating map information of the subblocks; a step 20 for generating bit streams of a determined mode, the map information, and representative pixel values representing the pixel values of the block or the subblocks.
