PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for treating or conditioning a gel between electrophoretic separation and electrophoretic transfer of giant molecule by separating giant molecules contained in a sample at first through electrophoresis and then transferring the giant molecules onto a membrane through electrophoresis.
CONSTITUTION: Two compartments 6, 7 are filled with an electrophoretic electrolyte and an electrode 8 is connected with an appropriate power supply to start electrophoresis. Upon finishing separation electrophoresis, power supply is interrupted from the electrode 8 and Perspex blocks 13, 14 are reset. When the power supply is connected with electrodes 20, 21, negatively charged giant molecules pass through a gel and migrate toward an anode 20 and then held on the membrane in a pattern matching the pattern in the gel. After electrical transfer, blocks 13-16, frame 22, porous plate 23 and electrode 21 are removed from the equipment so that the membrane/gel structure can be taken out. This arrangement eliminates the need for treating or conditioning a gel between electrophoretic separation and transfer of giant molecule.
