To dispense with a device to carry and feed the cold iron source from a preheating chamber to a melting chamber, and to efficiently melt the cold iron source without using any electric power.
In melting the cold iron source using an arc melting equipment having a melting furnace 1 and a preheat shaft 2 directly connected to an upper part thereof, the scrap 3 in the melting furnace 1 is melted by the heat of an oxygen burner 6 and the reaction heat of the oxygen from an oxygen blowing lance 16 with the coke from a coke blowing device 12 while the scrap 3 is continuously or intermittently fed into the preheat shaft 2 so as to keep the condition where the scrap 3 is continuously present from the melting furnace 1 to the preheat shaft 2. When the molten steel of the prescribed quantity is stored in the melting furnace 1, the molten steel is tapped into a ladle in a condition where the scrap 3 is present in the melting furnace 1 and the preheat shaft 2.
