Title:
METHOD FOR EVALUATING CHARACTERISTIC OF SINGLE-MODE OPTICAL FIBER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3388496
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To evaluate the distribution of characteristics in the longitudinal direction of an optical fiber nondestructively in simple wavelength by performing measurement from both directions of a single-mode optical fiber and the performing the numerical processing of a back scattering light intensity.
SOLUTION: A back scattering light intensity S1 (λ, z) at a position z of an optical fiber when a pulse beam with a wavelength of λ is incident from one side of a single-mode optical fiber with an arbitrary length L and a back scattering light intensity S2 (λ, L-z) when a pulse beam with a wavelength λis incident from the other side are measured, thus obtaining the arithmetical means intensity of the back scattering light intensity measured from both edges is obtained from an expression. Using the data and the measured values of a mode field diameter z and the maximum specific refractive index ratio difference at one edge of the optical fiber, a mode field diameter, a waveguide dispersion, a material dispersion, a wavelength dispersion, and a dispersion slope, and a zero dispersion wavelength at the arbitrary position (z) can be obtained. Also, a measurement time can be reduced by evaluation using only one wavelength.
