Abstract:

To provide a method allowing a great reduction in measuring time and accurate evaluation of the water absorption characteristic of artificial lightweight aggregate.

A sample of known mass before water absorption is put in a vacuum container and suction is carried out for at least two minutes at a degree of vacuum of 80 kPa or higher, after which water is injected until the sample is completely immersed therein. Thereafter, the inside of the container is immediately restored to atmospheric pressure and the sample with water absorbed therein is taken out; after water on the surface of the sample is wiped away to dry the surface, the mass of the sample is measured. The water absorption characteristic of the sample is evaluated on the basis of the difference between the mass of the sample when its surface is dry and the mass of the sample before it absorbs water.
