PURPOSE: To make it possible to cost effectively recover Sc as a byproduct of Ti refining from residues by supplying Ti ores to a fluidized bed chlorinating furnace and forming the vapor phase and residues of titanium chloride.
CONSTITUTION: The Ti ores are supplied to the fluidized bed chlorinating furnace kept at 800 to 1,250°C where the vapor phase mainly consisting of the titanium chloride and the solid residues are formed. The metal Ti and titanium oxide are obtd. by treating the vapor phase. The solid residues are leached by an aq. acid soln. and the resulted aq. soln. is brought into contact with the org. phase of polyalkyl phosphate to extract the Sc into the org. phase. The Sc is then reverse-stripped by HCl, etc., and thereafter, ammonium is added thereto to precipitate the scandium hydroxide. This precipitate is calcined and the Sc is recovered in the form of oxide.
