To provide a method for forming a multi-layer coating film which can control a defective appearance by the evaporation of a solvent without retarding a coating process and do it in a short time while saving a space in a method for forming a three-coat one baking multi-layer coating film.

In the method for forming the multi-layer coating film, after an aqueous intermediate coating material is applied on the surface of a substrate with an electrodeposited coating film formed, an intermediate coat coating film is dried preliminarily in conditions in which the wind speed of air is increased, the air is dehumidified, or both are done without so much increasing the temperature of air to be sprayed on the surface of the coating film so that the coating film solid content percentage of the intermediate coat coating film is made 70-98 wt.%. An aqueous base paint and a clear paint are applied wet-on-wet on it, and the coating films of three layers are cured simultaneously.
