1456133 Bearings J B THOMSON 7 Jan 1974 [19 Jan 1973] 35580/74 Divided out of 1456131 Heading F2A A shaft for the linear motion ball bearing assembly disclosed in Specification 1,456,131 is provided with at least one axially extending hardened metal ball conforming groove. The groove may be formed in the surface of the shaft, e.g. by grinding, or it may be formed in an elongate strip member attached to the shaft. The strip member may be pressed into a slot in the shaft, or it may be slipped into a dovetailsectioned slot in the shaft. Alternatively, it may be bonded, brazed, or silver-soldered to the shaft. The strip member may be hardened by heat treatment before, during or after attachment to the shaft. Alternatively, the groove may be work hardened by cold forming.
