To generate engraving data ensuring an image quality of high degree even for finely structured printing copy.
In order to generate engraving data 6 for an intaglio printing cylinder, in particular, on the basis of printing copy 1 and a raster schedule 2 which are vectored, at least one working raster 4 is selected for the engraving data 6 within a range of variation defined beforehand, dependently on geometric structures of elements contained in the printing copy. This working raster differs from the raster schedule 2. In the printing copy 1, at least one linear element is selected first. Then, the working raster matched with the periodicity of a detected linear element regarding density and/or angle is detected in the range of variation. A character element is selected thereafter in the printing copy 1 and matched with the working raster on the basis of font hinting data. The geometric structure of the raster belonging to a process color to be distinguished is also expanded or compressed in the direction of a line and/or feed, as occasion demands, so that it be aligned with the selected linear element.
