PURPOSE: To easily make a large and a small diameter portions concentric to each other and perform sure finishment to set an angle between the peripheral surface of the large diameter portion and its end face, by using a stepped grindstone to simultaneously grind the peripheral surfaces of the large and small diameter portions.
CONSTITUTION: A stepped grindstone 2 has a level difference equal to that between the large diameter portion 1a and small diameter portion 1b of a stepped shaft 1. The corners of the end face 2a between the large and small diameter portions of the grindstone 2 are rounded. The end face 1c and relief groove 1d of the stepped shaft 1 are first ground by a grindstone 3. After that, the stepped grindstone 2 is set on the stepped shaft 1 so that the end face 2a of the grindstone is out of contact with that 1c of the shaft and the rounded corners of the end face 2a are also out of contact with the corner between the large diameter portion 1a and end face 1c of the shaft. The peripheral surfaces of the large diameter portion 1a and the small diameter portion 1b are then simultaneously ground by the grindstone 2.
