To finish the grinding for a short time because of small grinding quantity and to improve the productivity by finding in advance the worn quantity and the thermal expansion quantity of a roll just before grinding, finding the profile of the roll, deciding the distribution of the grinding quantity over the axial direction of the roll and executing the grinding of the rolling roll according to this distribution.
At the time of grinding the rolling roll in on-line, the worn quantity and the thermal expansion quantity of the roll just before grinding are found out in advance. The profile of the roll synthesizing these values is obtd. and the distribution of grinding quantity over the axial direction is obtd. from this synthetic profile to execute the grinding of the rolling roll according to this distribution. By this method, the grinding of the profile of the roll suitable for the rolling in the following time at more than the conventional time can be executed. As a result, the production of the rigid material having defective shape is restrained, the productivity is improved and the service life of the roll is extended. Further, the profile of the steel plate in the case of edge-rolling after grinding becomes good state in comparison with the steel plate at the time of grinding with the conventional grinding method.
