PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for heat treating steel, excellent in safety and a method for manufacturing a machine part, capable of performing the method for heat-treating the steel.SOLUTION: A method for heat-treating steel, capable of heat-treating a steel material 10 by heating the steel material 10 in a heat treatment gas atmosphere formed in a heat treatment furnace 1 comprises the steps of: arranging the steel material 10 in the heat treatment furnace 1; forming a heat treatment gas atmosphere including a decomposition gas of ethylene glycol in the heat treatment furnace 1; and heat-treating the steel material 10 by heating the steel material 10 in the heat treatment gas atmosphere.
