Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a method for hydrogenating an unsatd. polyhydroxyhydrocarbon polymer which can be executed industrially advantageously in the presence of a catalyst and a reaction solvent by using, as the reaction solvent, a solvent contg. an alcohol at least in a specified concn.
CONSTITUTION: An unsatd. polyhydroxyhydrocarbon polymer is hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and a reaction solvent contg. at least 20wt.% alcohol. The polymer has carbon-carbon double bonds in the main chain or side chains and on average at least 1.1 hydroxyl groups in the molecule, an esp. suitable example being a polyhydroxypolybutadiene. An aliph. hydrocarbon is used as a solvent for mixing with an alcohol; an isopropyl alcohol-n-- heptane mixture is esp. suitable.
