Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of identifying faults in a target system.SOLUTION: A method of identifying faults in a target system includes the steps of: providing a failure knowledge database 5 for the target system, wherein a data record specifies a failure mode and a failure symptom; receiving a particular component and a report; identifying candidate failure mode and symptom data records by reference to the failure knowledge database; calculating confidence values for the candidate data records; comparing the calculated confidence values; and generating a maintenance instruction. The method further includes the step of providing a failure symptom correction database for a subset of the failure knowledge database. Alternative components and alternative failure symptoms have failure mode and symptom data records. The identifying step uses the correction database to expand the number of identified candidate failure mode and symptom data records to include data records of alternative components and alternative failure symptoms.
