Abstract:

To improve luminous efficacy of a plasma display.

The luminous efficacy is improved by coating phosphor particles 11, 21 with dielectric layers 10, 20. The dielectric layers 10, 20 have refractive index between the reflective index of the phosphor particles and the refractive index is vacuum to ultraviolet rays 14, 24 emitting out of plasma. In the case the thickness of the dielectric layers 10, 20 is controlled within a range from 0.5 to 5μm, the dielectric layers 10, 20 decrease the reflectivity of the phosphor particles. In the case of a coating 0.1-0.5μm thick, the reflectivity is decreased due to the interference of the light beams reflected in the vacuum/coating layer interface and the coating/phosphor interface. Several methods to form such reflection preventive films are provided. A CVD method, a PVD method, and method carried out by suspending phosphor particles in a molten dielectric material and then slowly pouring the resultant suspension on the surface of an adhesive or non-adhesive surface are among the methods.
