PURPOSE: To simply increase the bulkiness of creped tissue products without causing strength degradation by bringing a creped tissue web into contact with steam while stressed in the machine direction of the tissue web.

CONSTITUTION: This method is to bring a creped tissue web into contact with steam while stressed in the machine direction of the tissue web so as to increase the bulkiness of the web. The steaming treatment is preferably carried out under the following conditions: (1) the tension value stressed on the web is 1-15 g/(inch width) in the case of facial and bath tissue and is 1-100 g/(inch width) in the case of a paper towel; and (2) the processing time is ≤1 second.
