PURPOSE: To easily obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for fibers, liquid crystals, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, dyes, etc., by reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid or its derivative with a carbon tetrahalide in the presence of a cyclodextrin and an alkali metal hydroxide.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polybasic aromatic carboxylic acid is produced by reacting an aromatic carboxylic acid or its derivative such as a benzenecarboxylic acid of formula I (R1 is H, alkyl or alkali metal; R2 is H, alkyl, alkoxy, or halogen, etc.), a biphenylcarboxylic acid of formula II (R3 is H, OH, alkyl, alkoxy, amino, or halogen, etc.), a naphthalenecarboxylic acid of formula III and diphenylcarboxylic acid of formula IV (X is O, CH2, CH=CH, CO, NH, N=N, S, or SO2, etc.) with a carbon tetrahalide (e.g. carbon tetrachloride) in the presence of a cyclodextrin (e.g. β-cyclodextrin) and an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. sodium hydroxide), thereby replacing the hydrogen bonded to an aromatic ring by carboxyl group.
