To provide a method for isomerizing an olefin for obtaining in high yield a lubricant base oil having high viscosity index and low pour point using an isomerization catalyst of high isomerizing performance, and to provide a method for producing such a lubricant base oil from the resultant isomerized oil.
The method for isomerizing an olefin-containing waxy stock oil comprises exposing the olefin-containing waxy stock oil to an isomerization catalyst under hydrogen pressurization. The catalyst to be used in this method is obtained by carrying at least one metal component selected from group 8 metals and group 6A metals on a carrier that is prepared by mixing alumina with 1-80 wt.% of a crystalline molecular sieve having pores 6.5-7.5 in major axis and ≥50 in molar ratio SiO2/Al2O3. The method for producing the lubricant base oil comprises distilling the resultant isomerized oil off light fraction and dewaxing the residual fraction.
