PURPOSE: To provide a method for isomerizing a wax by which a base oil for a lube oil, excellent in optical stability and having a high viscosity index is economically obtained in a high yield by using one kind of catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: This method for isomerizing a wax is to regulate the contact temperature in a reactional zone on the upstream side to 350-450°C and that on the downstream side to a lower temperature than the contact temperature in the reactional zone on the upstream side by ≥35°C in bringing the wax into contact with a catalyst for isomerizing the wax containing at least one metallic component selected from nickel, cobalt, molybdenum and tungsten and, as desired, phosphorus supported on a refractory inorganic oxide carrier under 50-150kg/cm3 pressure of hydrogen. Furthermore, this method for producing a base oil for a lube oil having ≤0.01wt.% content of 4-membered ring condensed polycyclic aromatic components having the pyrene ring is to dewax a product oil obtained by the method for isomerizing the wax.
