To lubricate an internal combustion engine, and improve the efficiency of an exhaust control system.
In a method for lubricating the internal combustion engine and improving the efficiency of the exhaust control system of the engine, the exhaust control system includes a catalyst containing an exhaust gas after a processing device. The method comprises the steps of: (A) selecting a lubricating oil composition containing a base oil, a surfactant containing an alkaline metal or an alkali earth metal, a metal salt of at least one phosphorus-containing compound, and an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms and a TBN of at least about 2, wherein the lubricating oil composition has a phosphorus content of about 0.12% and substantially no copper; (B) adding the lubricating oil composition to the engine; (C) operating the engine; (D) producing a dilute phosphorus-containing exhaust gas; and (E) bringing the catalyst into contact with the dilute phosphorus-containing exhaust gas in the exhaust gas after the processing device.
