To provide a method of making asbestos harmless by which asbestos is recovered by using a mixture obtained by blending an asbestos scattering preventive agent and a rust preventive agent by a solution with sodium silicate as a main component with titanium dioxide and alumina added thereto, further an alkaline earth metal compound (beryllium, magnesium, strontium, barium, radium) is mixed with the recovered asbestos, the compound-added asbestos is put into a frame and is subjected to heat treatment in an electric furnace, for recovering asbestos and making it harmless.
An asbestos recovery method uses an asbestos treating agent comprising a basic solution with a sodium silicate molar ratio of 2.6-3.2, or a rust preventive agent. The method of making asbestos harmless is for mixing a calcium compound into asbestos recovered by using the treating agent as an additive and heat treating the recovered asbestos mixed with the calcium compound in the electric furnace.
