Abstract:

To provide stemmed webs, such as mechanical fasteners, having a variety of properties to meet more varied applications.

The web (10) has a plurality of stems (12) extending from at least one side of the web. The web includes at least a first layer (14) of material having a first side and a second side and a second layer (16) of material. The second layer of material has a first side which faces the first side of the first layer and a second side from which the plurality of stems protrude. The method of manufacturing the web includes selection of a first material for the first layer of the material and selection of a second material for the second layer of the material. The first and second layers of the material are melted and formed. After that, the first and second layers of material are joined during they are in a molten state to form a multilayer sheet. Further, the plurality of stems are formed at least on the second layer of material. The melt-forming can include simultaneous melt-forming of the first and second layers such as coextrusion.
