To provide fine cuttlefish ink pigment particles containing a black or dark brown melanin pigment, which are useful for a toner for a copying machine, an aqueous ink, an oily ink or a hair dye source material.
The method for manufacturing cuttlefish ink pigment particles is characterized in that: after an ink sac of cuttlefish is dried, pulverized and cleaned, cuttlefish ink is subjected to a first enzymatic reaction by using a protease under the conditions of the enzyme concentration in a range from 0.1 to 1% with respect to the dry weight of the cuttlefish ink and of a pH range from 7 to 10, the ink is purified with an ultrafiltration membrane of 1,000 kDa to remove impurities; the purified cuttlefish ink is subjected to a second enzymatic reaction under concentration and pH conditions increased than in the first enzymatic reaction, in a range from 5 to 20% with respect to the dry weight of the ink and in a pH range from 9 to 11, and the ink is filtered through an ultrafiltration membrane of 1,000 kDa to produce monodisperse particles having a normal distribution having the center in a range of 145 to 486 nm.
