To provide a method for easily manufacturing a graded index optical element having IR absorption power by easily producing a graded index state in a desired position of a glass substrate having IR absorption power without requiring a specified process environment and without using a fused salt.
The graded index optical element having IR absorption power is manufactured by applying a paste containing at least one kind selected from a group consisting of lithium compounds, potassium compounds, rubidium compounds, cesium compounds, silver compounds, copper compounds, and thallium compounds, an organic resin and an organic solvent on a glass substrate containing an alkali metal component and at least one kind selected from a group consisting of iron, copper, cobalt and vanadium, and having an iron content of over 3 wt.% in terms of Fe2O3 with respect to 100 wt.% of the entire glass when single iron is included in iron, copper, cobalt, and vanadium.
