Abstract:
To provide a method for easily forming a protective layer consisting of high melting point metal carbide such as tantalum carbide on a carbon base material constituting a carbon heating element.SOLUTION: A carbon base material 3 has, for example, a bar shape and is rotatably held by a cradle (a negative electrode) 5. A tantalum electrode (a positive electrode) 9 is arranged so that its tip contacts with an outer peripheral surface of the carbon base material 3. The application and discharge of a pulse current between the tantalum electrode 9 and the carbon base material 3 can evaporate tantalum atoms 21 of the tantalum electrode 9 on the carbon base material 3 to preferably form tantalum carbide 22. A facility is simple, operation can be performed in an environment of room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and operation cost is low. The high yield of the tantalum electrode 9 has no material loss. Since carbon atoms 20 constituting the carbon base material 3 are formed into the tantalum carbide, a protective layer 4 is hard to be peeled.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
