Abstract:
An optical fibre carrier-and illumination-plate is made contg. the uniformly-distributed light exit ends of numerous internally-reflecting fibres on one side. An optical material is extruded through nozzles to form the fibres; and the front end of each fibre enters a through hole (a) in the plate. The plate is then moved away from the nozzles while extrusion is continued to obtain fibres with the required length. holes (a) are pref. counterbored to provide a location for the fibre. Pref. the mfg. plant consists of an extruder located above a piston (b) on which the carrier plate is located; the extruder barrel is fitted with nozzles through which the optical material is driven to fill holes (a) in the plate. The plate is then lowered via piston (b) while a second piston (c) in the extruder barrel continuous the extrusion. The front ends of the fibres may be convex, thus forming a lens. Used for the mfr. of glass or plastic optical fibres which are already connected to a plate.
