Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem associated with the appearance of variation of applied voltage-transmittance characteristics in the lapse of time influenced by a bias voltage in MDL (monodomain layer) treatment of a CDR (continuous director rotation) type liquid crystal display element with application of a direct current voltage which results in display unevenness and lowering of display quality.
SOLUTION: In a process to select a kind of layer structures of a chiral smectic C phase by cooling down the element from a cholesteric phase or from an isotropic liquid phase under the application of an electric field in the MDL treatment, the electric field to be applied is given by an electric signal the time interval and the amplitude of which are asymmetrically modulated in positive and negative directions.
