To provide a method for manufacturing a long fiber reinforced metal-matrix composite material, by which manufacturing time can be greatly shortened and filling ratio of matrix metal among reinforcing fibers can be improved.
This method for manufacturing the long fiber reinforced metal-matrix composite material by sintering reinforcing fibers and matrix metal by a spark plasma sintering process includes: thermally spraying powder particles of the matrix metal onto a reinforcing fiber sheet composed of the reinforcing fibers to form a metallic film; laminating a plurality of the reinforcing fiber sheets on each of which the metal film is formed; and applying a pressure from a lamination direction to the laminated reinforcing fiber sheets and applying a pulsed electric current to generate discharge plasma and sinter the laminated reinforcing fiber sheets. By this method, as compared with conventional manufacturing methods in which filling of matrix metal powder is performed by handwork, manufacturing time can be greatly shortened and the filling ratio of the matrix metal among the reinforcing fibers can be greatly improved.
