To provide an efficient industrial manufacturing method suppressing fluorination reaction from perchloroethylene to pentafluoroethane.
There is provided a method of manufacturing pentafluoroethane including (i) a step of reacting perchloroethylene, and 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane and/or 2-chloro-1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane if the case may be, with hydrofluoric acid in a gass phase in a presence of a catalyst in a thermal insulation multistage reactor, and (ii) a step of separating stream manufactured in the step (i) for obtaining a fraction of a light product and a fraction of a heavy product. The catalyst is a chromium oxide (Cr2O3)-based catalyst in an oxidation state of more than zero and containing other metals selected from Ni, Co, Mn and Zn if the case may be, and a temperature at entrance of the fist stage of the heat insulation reactor is between 280 and 350°C, preferably between 320 and 340°C.
