To provide a method for manufacturing a polarizing plate with which a yield in a punching process is improved, which can use a hydrophobic protective film and is of high performance and at a low cost, and a liquid crystal display device using the polarizing plate.
In this method for manufacturing the polarizing plate that is stretched inclinedly with ≥80% degree of polarization and ≥35% transmittance, a stretching process for advancing a holding means for a film in a longitudinal direction and stretching the film while giving tension and a process for sticking a protective film to a polarizing film are included. In the stretching process, a locus L1 of a holding means of one end of the film, a locus L2 of a holding means of the other end, and a distance W between two substantially holding release points satisfy the following expression (1): L2-L1>0.4W. With the bearing properties off the film maintained, the film is stretched while providing ≥12% volatile matter rate, and the film is later contracted to lower the volatile matter rate and to form a polarizing film. In a protective film sticking process, the volatile matter rate of the polarizing film is less than 10% just before sticking the protective film during and after the contraction.
