To provide a method for manufacturing a polycarboxylic acid-based copolymer which permits the manufacture, by an aqueous solution polymerization with raw materials charged at a time, of a polycarboxylic acid-based copolymer and continuous execution of all reactions in one reactor thereby to give the polycarboxylic acid-based copolymer at a high polymer content with good productivity at a low cost.
The method for manufacturing a polycarboxylic acid-based copolymer comprises copolymerizing a polyoxyalkylene derivative (a) bearing a 2-8C unsaturated hydrocarbyl group with an unsaturated carboxylic acid-based compound (b) in the presence of a water-soluble initiator (c) by aqueous solution polymerization, where the ratio of the charged components (a), (b) and (c) is such that 1.2-3.5 moles of (b) and 0.05-0.8 mole of (c) are charged per mol of (a), all raw materials are charged at a time and the polymerization is carried out at a polymerization temperature of 45-65°C.
