To provide a method for efficiently producing a high quality and amorphous wholly aromatic polyester by melt polymerization comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid as an acid component and a bisphenol as an aromatic diol component.
In the method for preparing a wholly aromatic polyester by heat melting and reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid with a bisphenol in the coexistence of a diaryl carbonate to produce an amorphous aromatic polyester, a titanium compound represented by the formula: Ti(OR6)n(OR7)m (wherein R6 is a 1-6C alkyl group, 5-10C cycloalkyl group, or 6-12C aralkyl group; R7 is a 6-12C aryl group; and (n) and (m) are each 0 or an integer of 1-4, provided n+m=4) is used as a catalyst therefor to efficiently produce an amorphous aromatic polyester having intrinsic viscosity (measured at 35°C in a solvent mixture comprising phenol/1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane wt ratio of 60/40) of at least 0.3.
