PURPOSE: To measure the deformability of a red blood cell in the state approxi mate to the state in the spleen by forming a filter for the red blood cell of a thin Si3N4 film provided with a microhole.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrostatic pressure difference is given between a high- pressure chamber A and a low-pressure chamber B. The red blood cells are passed through the microhole 16 of the thin film 14 from the chamber A and is moved to the chamber B by the hydrostatic pressure difference. The light projected from an optical fiber 9a to a microscope 19 is shut off at this time and the deformability of the red blood cell is measured from the time when the light is shut off. The thin Si3N4 film is used as the thin film 14. This thin film is formed to about severalWseveral tens μm thickness by applying a semi conductor processing technique. The shape and size of the microhole 16 are determinable with high accuracy by the semiconductor processing technique. The deformability of the red blood cell is measured in the state approximate to the state in the spleen from this result.
