To provide a method for melting a cold iron source with high efficiency to reduce a power unit requirement and a melting facility.
The method for melting a cold iron source 17 in an arc furnace 1 having a melting chamber 2 including arc generating electrodes 6, 7 and a shaft type preheating chamber 3 directly coupled to the chamber 2 to introduce an exhaust gas generated from the chamber 2 comprises the steps of melting the cold iron source 17 by an arc 20 while continuously or intermittently supplying the source 17 to the preheating chamber to hold the source 17 the state continuously existing to the chamber 3 and the chamber 2, then inclining the chamber 3 at the time point of storing at least one heat of melted steel 18 in the chamber 2 to reduce a contact area of the source in the chamber 2 with the melted steel, heating the steel 18 by the arm to raise its temperature, and then tapping the steel 18 in the state for continuously existing the source 17 to the chambers 2 and 3. And, the apparatus for the method is provided.
