Abstract:

PURPOSE: To make the grains of a superplastic alloy fine in an industrially advantageous manner by melting and refining the alloy in a calcic refractory vessel under specified conditions.

CONSTITUTION: A superplastic alloy is melted and refined in a vessel lined with a calcic refractory. At this time, the molten alloy is held at a temp. higher then the m.p. of the alloy by ≥100°C and/or under reduced pressure. Al and/or Ti can be added beforehand to the molten alloy. By this method, the calcic refractory is reduced by metals having an affinity for oxygen in the molten alloy, e.g., Al and Ti to leach Ca. This Ca is effective in making the resulting grains fine.
