Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a pellet of high sintered density through a process for regenerating and reusing a scrapped UO2 material.

CONSTITUTION: A scrap is oxidized in a high temperature furnace for generating U3O8 at a step 2. Furthermore, U3O8 particles obtainable from the oxidizing furnace are made to react with nitric acid, thereby generating a solution of uranyl nitrate capable of meeting the concentration of an ADU deposition process and a free acid condition. Thereafter, a two-step ADU deposition process 6 is implemented under control, thereby generating ADU particles of such a size and status as forming UO2 powder of large surface area having high sintered pellet ceramic characteristics. The ADU particles are, then, formed into UO2 via calcination 8 and hydrogen reduction, and the UO2 powder of large surface area is passivated at a step 10.
