Abstract:

To provide a method of open loop and closed loop control of the number and sequence of strokes in an operative process in a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine that increases the efficiency of an internal combustion engine.

For combustion leaner than the stoichiometric level, the method of open loop and closed loop control of the number and sequence of strokes in an operative process in a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine, especially a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine with direct injection, can use oxygen not yet used in combustion for a further working stroke, and performs gas exchange only after the residual oxygen in a combustion chamber is completely burned or after an air ratio λ in the combustion chamber falls below a lower limit value λgrenz.
