PURPOSE: To surely and sufficiently open staple fiber assemblies by even when the fiber volume ratio of the staple fiber assemblies is high and the staple fibers are mutually strongly entangled.
CONSTITUTION: An opening vessel 10, having a filter 14 in the lower part and housing impellers 20 in the interior is prepared. The staple fiber assemblies 30 are charged into the vessel and air streams 28 are blown from the lower part of the filter into the vessel to keep the staple fiber assemblies in a fluidized state. In this state, the impellers are rotated to apply shearing force to open the staple fiber assemblies. The apparatus for opening is equipped with staple fiber assembly feeders 64 and 38 for feeding the staple fiber assemblies into the vessel and gas feeders 24 and 26 for feeding high-pressure gas as gas streams through the filter into the vessel.
