To provide a method of operating an engine by which an air-fuel mixture in an ignition chamber is properly ignited and the occurrence of pre-ignition is prevented regardless of the engine load being high or low.
An ignition plug 12 in which the ignition chamber 21 is formed in a plug cover 20 covering an ignition point is loaded to a cylinder head 3. A communication hole 22 allowing the ignition chamber 21 to communicate with a combustion chamber 7 facing a piston 4 is provided in the plug cover 20. The ignition plug 12 is loaded in the cylinder head 3 so that the ignition chamber 21 and the combustion chamber 7 may communicate with each other through a communication hole 22 by projecting the plug cover 20 to the combustion chamber 7 from the cylinder head 3 side and the amount of projection of the plug cover 20 projected to the combustion chamber 7 is controlled according to the level of the engine load.
