PURPOSE: To resolve a racemic modification into antipodes thereof, by using (+)- or (-)-spirobifluorenol as an optical resolving agent, forming a clathrate compound thereof from one optical isomer of a racemic organic compound, separating the resultant clathrate compound, and decomposing the separated clathrate compound.
CONSTITUTION: A racemic modification of an organic amine, e.g. 2-aminobutanol, DL-phenylglycine, 3-methylpiperidine or 3-hydroxy-N-methylmorpholine, is reacted with (+)- or (-)-spirobifluorenol expressed by the formula to form selectively a clathrate compound thereof from one optical isomer of the racemic organic amine, and the resultant clathrate compound is then separated and decomposed to obtain one optical isomer of the racemic organic amine. Thus, the racemic organic amine having one or two or more asymmetric carbon atoms is resolved into the antipodes thereof. The optical resolving agent is used in a molar amount of preferably 1W2 times based on the racemic organic amine.
