Abstract:

To provide an oxidative desulfurization method for diminishing the sulfur content of a liquid petroleum product by efficiently separating sulfur components in the petroleum product such as kerosene, light oil, naphtha or gasoline, and to provide a plant for the method.

The oxidative desulfurization method comprises the following process: an ozone-containing gas is contacted with the sulfur-containing liquid petroleum product to oxidize the sulfur components in the petroleum product and the resultant oxidized sulfur compounds is separated by extraction, or the like, using a solvent containing a lower alcohol such as methanol. The resulting solvent containing the oxidized sulfur compounds can be refined, as necessary, by using a means such as distillation and reused.
