To obtain a syndiotactic polymer by polymerizing an olefin, particularly propylene in the presence of a supported metallocene catalyst prepared by adding silica treated with an aluminoxane to a nonpolar solvent to form a slurry, adding a metallocene solution to this slurry and agitating the obtained mixture and separating the product.
Dehydrated silica is suspended in a nonpolar solvent (e.g. toluene), an aluminoxane (e.g. methylaluminoxane) solution is added to the suspension, and the obtained mixture is heated under reflux. After cooling the mixture to room temperature, the solid silica is separated. This silica is treated with a solution obtained by dissolving a metallocene represented by the formula R" b(CpR5-b) (CpR'5-b)MR*r-2 (wherein R" is a bridge through which the two cyclopentadiene rings are joined together; b is 0 to 1; Cp is a cyclopentadienyl ring; R and R' are each a substituent on the cyclopentadienyl ring and is hydride or a 1-9C hydrocarbyl group; M is 3B, 4B, 5B or 6B metal; R* is a hydride, a halogen or a 1-20C hydrocarbyl; and v is the valence of M) in a solvent to produce a catalyst.
