To provide a method for producing a branched olefin and a surfactant using the branched olefin.
The method for preparing the branched olefin containing ≤0.5% quaternary carbon atoms includes dehydration of an isoparaffin-based composition containing ≤0.5% quaternary aliphatic carbon atoms on a suitable catalyst. The isoparaffin-based composition contains 7-35C paraffins at least a part of molecules in which are branched and have 0.7-2.5 number average of branching per paraffin molecule and the branching is a methyl branch and, if needed, an ethyl branch, and is prepared by hydrocracking and hydroisomerization of a paraffin-based wax. A method for using the olefin, especially, to produce a surface active sulfuric acid ester or a sulfonic acid salt, including conversion of the branched olefin to the surfactant, and anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants or cationic surfactants produced by the method are provided.
