To easily produce a catalyst for hydrocracking and halogenation by mixing an aq. alkali soln. with coal in a first controlled atmosphere to form an aq. mixture, heating and drying the mixture and then reheating the dried mixture in a second controlled atmosphere to form a carbonized material.
When a catalyst is produced, coal 12 supplied to a mixer 16 is brought into contact with a soln. of an alkali hydroxide 14 such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide in the mixer. In this case, the coal is thoroughly mixed with the hydroxide at a specified temp. for a specified time while supplying a control gas into the mixer 16 from a gas supply source 15. The mixture 18 obtained is heated in a controlled atmosphere in a first heating stage 20, then supplied to a drying and dehydrating stage 26, dried and dehydrated to obtain an alkali-treated coal 28. The coal 28 is then sent to a second heating stage 30 in a second controlled atmosphere a second gas supply source 22, reheated and then sent to a cooling stage 32 and a cleaning stage 34 to obtain the objective catalyst.
